Melanie McDonald getting ready to Lift-Off
On Saturday July 9th Melanie McDonald was playing a set at La Maison Tavern in Cornwall. The 29 year old, singer songwriter and lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Cornwall Ontario rock band The General Electryk wants to someday win a Juno. She will be performing at Kinsmen Cornwall Lift-Off next week.

Cornwall - Jul. 10, 2011 - On Saturday July 9th Melanie McDonald was playing a set at La Maison Tavern in Cornwall. The 29 year old, singer songwriter and lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Cornwall Ontario rock band The General Electryk, played an intimate set in front of about fifty people.

The stage was set up like a living room, and she was sitting on a couch singing and playing her guitar. The audience was very receptive, enjoying a mix of original and cover songs with lots of catchy hooks.

Next Saturday Melanie McDonald and The General Electryk will be playing one of the biggest Cornwall shows of the year. On July 16th they will be opening up for Kim Mitchell at Kinsmen Cornwall Lift-Off 2011.

According to McDonald, "Lift-Off for me is more than just a show, it is an open support of the arts in our community. We can show off what we have in town, and it is an honour to be asked to play". Last year Melanie McDonald and The General Electryk opened up for Chantal Kreviazuk at Lift-Off 2010.

Melanie McDonald has played shows in Canada and Australia. In Australia she also did some busking. "Going out of town, busking in the street, gives me inspiration to write and it helps build my confidence. When busking it's the hardest audience to play to, but it puts you out there".

Recently McDonald has played a few out of town shows, including a set at Zaphod Beeblebrox in Ottawa, a venue that has hosted the likes of The Rolling Stones and Alanis Morissette.

Melanie McDonald and The General Electryk are getting recognition for their efforts and accomplishments. They were the 2011 Seeker Choice Musical Artist of the year. "Last years was a good year, but on a personal front I went through a lot, so to be recognized is humbling, it is nice to be recognized for a lot of hard work", explains McDonald. Last year the General Electryk released a CD, and by the end of this year Melanie McDonald plans to release a solo EP. What is Melanie McDonald's long term goal with music? According to McDonald, "I want a Juno".
