Lancaster - Jul. 22, 2011 - During Dalton McGuinty’s eight year reign, the employment situation in Ontario has suffered terribly. Dalton’s record of tax grabs, expensive energy experiments and excessive red tape is handcuffing small businesses’ ability to grow, prosper and most importantly, create jobs. These are the businesses that are the backbone of our economy and the heart of our community. They are the retail stores that sponsors our children’s minor hockey teams. They are the businesses that gave many of us our first jobs, and where most of us in Ontario still work today.

This week, Tim Hudak released his Small Business Bill of Rights recognizing that small businesses are the engine of growth, job creation, and prosperity in Ontario. The Bill will give five specific rights to small businesses that will guarantee fair, helpful, and equal treatment from the Ontario government. These are:

  • A commitment to red tape reduction. He is committed to reducing the regulatory burden by a minimum of 30%, and the entire Cabinet will have its pay docked if it misses important regulatory goals.

  • Choice over mandatory smart meter energy pricing. Businesses must serve their customers and do not have the option of shifting business to off peak hours. A Tim Hudak PC government will let small business owners decide whether the time-of-use pricing system works for them.

  • Fast, efficient, customer-friendly service standards for small businesses in their dealings with government. The PC government will streamline the complex process that exists today and give small businesses more ways to get routine government transactions done by extending office hours and providing more services online. Government ministries and agencies will be required to provide written responses on the clarification of regulations that will be honoured.

  • Greater ability to bid on government contracts. Today it is virtually impossible for small businesses to compete with larger businesses and corporations for government contracts. A Tim Hudak government will change the current system to allow small businesses to compete on an equal footing.

Ontario needs change to restore its economy and status within Canada to what it was before Dalton McGuinty took over. In just under eight years, his Liberal government has increased government spending by 70%, doubled Ontario’s debt, and increased the cost of hydro by 150%, while projecting an additional 46% increase over the next 5 years. The Ontario unemployment rate that has been higher than the national average for 54 straight months. It is little wonder Dalton McGuinty is trying to shift attention away from his record.

A Tim Hudak Progressive Conservative government will make Ontario competitive again and will be the best partner small business ever had. We need change to put Ontario back on track.
