Traditional Fun at the Sugar Bush

Traditional Fun at the Sugar Bush
I think of March as the turning month and St. Patrick’s Day as the launch party into spring. Having typed this, I recall snow during the March break and days in the 80s so March is unpredictable but the temperature has warmed and with the warmth comes the flow of sap. Grab the family or your chums and head to a sugar shack! I thought I would mention a few spots I’ve enjoyed over the years and also link an article I wrote back in 2011 with a maple pork recipe I made. I was living in Eastern Ontario when I wrote the article having moved from Quebec and I type this piece from our landing spot in SW Ontario.

Stoney Point - March 14, 2015 - I think of March as the turning month and St. If you’re in the London area, then visit Crinklaw Maple Products to watch demonstrations, enjoy a wagon ride and eat an amazing breakfast or lunch (gourmet maple grilled cheese -- oh my)! McLachlan Family Maple Syrup and Pancake House is another great destination to witness the sweet amber exliar being made and eat a delicious breakfast of pancakes, maple-baked beans and all the fixings. McCully’s Hill Farm in the Stratford area offers the complete package with demonstrations; horse drawn wagon rides through the bush and of course, pancakes. The Savour Stratford Maple Trail is another option for $25 plus HST, the pass includes six tickets that you can exchange for delicious maple tastes at six of the stops on a self-guided tour (Olive Your Favouries, Rheo Thompson Candies, Shakespeare Pies to name a few).

The Elmira Maple Syrup Festival has been around for 51 years and offers sugar bush tours, outdoor vendor mall, craft and toy shows and plenty of maple syrup. You can ride the train in from Waterloo (three round trips on Festival Day). Hmmmm when I think Elmira then I think of shopping in St. Jacobs so perhaps this is a day with your partner or chums. You can burn the calories from eating in Elmira by meandering in and out of the shops in St. Jacobs. Browsing in Artefacts alone would burn off breakfast! You can hit the bush the following weekend with the kiddos.

In my 2011 article I write about the Sand Road Sugar Camp in Moose Creek. The kiddo ran all over the property then we relaxed and had breakfast. Quinn Farm in L’Ile-Perrot is a favourite place of ours so visit them for maple syrup and during strawberry season, pumpkin picking, cutting down your Christmas tree -- you get the idea. These are some of my favourites so check out their websites to get all the information you will need to plan some fun
