Cornwall - Feb. 17, 2011 - The St. Lawrence College Sharks women's hockey team returned home with the silver medal from the Conestoga Invitational on Saturday.

With the silver finish, the Sharks have now earned two silver medals and a consolation championship in three tournaments to date this season.

"Although we fell a bit short of the gold medal for our second consecutive tournament, the ladies have continued to make great strides in their game," said head coach Sean Boulerice.

The Sharks opened the tournament with Conestoga (Kitchener). After playing to a scoreless tie after regulation, the Sharks entered their first shootout of the day. It was not until the eighth shooter when the game was finally decided in favour of Conestoga. Sara Hutchingame converted her shot for SLC Cornwall.

In the second game, the Sharks went up against Durham (Oshawa). SLC Cornwall opened the scoring when Callie McCleod scored at the 4:14 mark, with the assists going to Hutchingame and Brooke Marion. Durham tied it up at 1-1 late in the first period. The Sharks broke the tie when Michaela Brunton registered her first goal after converting a play that went through Marion and Hutchingame. Durham got one back at 2-2, but SLC Cornwall's Jenay Morin put the Sharks ahead 3-2 with 2:44 left in the period. Twenty-five seconds later, Durham pulled even once again and the score remained tied 3-3 after two periods. In the final frame, SLC Cornwall tallied the next two goals to pull ahead 5-3, with Hutchingame and Morin recording the goals. Durham scored again, but the one-goal cushion was enough to take the 5-4 victory.

After two games, the teams were seeded, with SLC Cornwall earning the second seed and would face Conestoga (Kitchener), the third seed. The teams were destined for another shootout after playing three more scoreless periods. In the second shootout between the squads, the Sharks came out on top as Hutchingame scored the lone goal of the shootout carrying the Sharks into the championship final against Fleming-P.

The Sharks were forced to play back-to-back games entering the final contest of the day, and played strong through the first period as it ended with a 0-0 scoreline. Fleming-P struck first with a goal late in the second and then came out with a powerplay goal early in the third period, to go ahead 2-0 over the Sharks. SLC Cornwall fought to get back in the contest, but time expired to give the Sharks the silver medal.

The Sharks will be in action again Friday, March 18, when they travel to Toronto for the Seneca Invitational.
