Ottawa - Nov. 4, 2011 - News out of the Ottawa Senators camp today concerning the health of Daniel Alfredsson is not good. Alfredsson himself told reporters that he still has dizzy spells from the concussion he sustained when he was hit by New York Rangers player Wojek Wolski during Saturday’s game.

Alfredsson says that he feels okay but not great. He hasn’t had any exercise since the incident and although he doesn’t have any headaches, he says that when he plays with his kids he feels light-headed. This isn’t good news for Senator fans. It doesn’t sound good for Alfredsson or the team and with head injuries you just don’t know.

Jason Spezza says that the Senators will miss Alfredsson and that “Even when he doesn’t score he can change the flow of the game with just one shift”. The loss of Alfredsson is huge. He made plays in both the Columbus and Winnipeg games which helped to seal the victory for the team.

As for the NHL and Brendan Shanahan, they chose not to give Wolski any suspension. Shanahan was quoted on the NHL network as saying “Wolski’s not a dirty player, and has no history of being a dirty player. There are collisions that occur on the ice where, unfortunately, one player sees it just prior.” Well Andy Sutton of the Edmonton Oilers isn’t a dirty player and doesn’t have a history of being a dirty player either Brendan.

In my opinion the NHL has dropped the ball on this one big time. Andy Sutton hit a player in the head who had the puck and received a five game suspension, Wolski hit a player who didn’t have the puck and that to me is much worse.

I know the game of hockey is played at a faster pace and that things can happen almost instantly. Slow replay down and most hits can look suspect; however players who play at high speeds can react at high speeds. If you or I were to turn on the ice and see someone for 2-3 seconds we may not have time to react of think of what to do, but an NHL player can see a collision a second or two before it happens and can react. That’s why they’re pro players, they can react almost instantaneously.

All that being said, Daniel Alfredsson will be out indefinitely, while Wolski gets off with little more than a rap on the knuckles.
