Cornwall - Mar. 11, 2011 - When barriers to postsecondary education are removed, students are given the opportunity to succeed not only in school, but also in life. That’s why Ontario is helping Crown Wards in Cornwall succeed at college, university and apprenticeship training.

A new Crown Ward Education Championship Team is being established in the Cornwall area to help at-risk youth graduate from high school and pursue postsecondary education, training, and employment. The team will work with Crown Ward students to help them navigate administrative barriers and access the services they need to succeed, such as:

  • Specialized financial aid and incentives to assist with the cost of postsecondary education

  • Mentorship and peer support

  • Guidance to help them access education and training opportunities Support for Crown Wards is part of the McGuinty government's Open Ontario plan to help every student succeed and build a knowledge-based economy for the future.

“As a former educator, I have seen firsthand how a postsecondary education provides students with the knowledge and skills that are necessary to succeed in life. I am therefore very supportive of the Crown Ward Education Championship Team, as it will help at-risk youth in my community to set and achieve educational goals that once seemed difficult to fulfill.” - Jim Brownell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry

“By removing the barriers to education faced by our Crown wards, we can help them reach their full potential and we can build the highly skilled workforce Ontario needs to succeed and prosper.” - John Milloy, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities

“We want all students, including the students in our care, to be able to take advantage of the opportunities available to them. It’s in Ontario’s best interest to help all students, especially those who need it the most.” - Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Education

“We want to give kids in our care the tools and support they need to flourish. These Championship Teams will help our kids succeed in school and create opportunities that will continue to be a pathway out of poverty for many.” - Laurel Broten, Minister of Children and Youth Services
